Smart grid encounters edge computing: opportunities and applications

Smart grids (SGs) are reforming towards utilizing massive data for operations and services. During this reform, the information communication technologies (ICTs) play a critical role, especially computing model, which determines how analytics in SG can be executed. Edge (EC), novel paradigm innovation, has high potential to help with digitization of SG. This paper seeks provide comprehensive review interdisciplinary research on EC applications First, an in-depth analysis EC, including definition, architectures, characteristics, key enabling is conducted from perspective application requirements. Afterward, systematically explores scenarios based its characteristics. Beyond that, synergistic effect integration also assessed: not only benefits but supports become sustainable. Challenges open questions then investigated.
